Owning the Facts: Leadership Forum on country-led strategies for HIS Strengthening.

From 10-12 August, key stakeholders from six African Countries including Uganda (represented by officials from Ministries of Health and ICT)

met in Addis Ababa for a Leadership Forum on Health Information Systems (HIS) development, to discuss lessons learned and best practices for HIS strengthening. The High Level Forum aimed to promote country ownership of health information and to increase awareness of the need to accelerate HIS reform.

“The Forum was an effective way to get to the core of HIS decision-making” said Dr. Mark Amexo, Technical Officer for the Health Metrics Network. “Participants were able to discuss managing HIS through multisectoral efforts and shared techniques to improve and identify opportunities for HIS strengthening under a bold and purposeful national ownership and leadership.”

Senior officials representing different sectors of health, statistics, communications and finance attended the Forum which drew upon knowledge learned from HIS country assessments carried out by organizations such as HMN and USAID. Participants worked towards establishing a country HIS Strengthening Leadership and Ownership agenda and explored potential options for financial and technical assistance in support of country led HIS strengthening.

The Forum was organized by USAID in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in collaboration with WHO, HMN, the World Bank, the UN International Telecommunications Union (ITU), East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
